What a closed abaya is

A closed abaya has no front opening. It goes on over the head and is worn as the whole outfit, with nothing needed underneath.

You will also see it called an overhead abaya. They are the same garment and the trade uses both words.

Not every closed abaya pulls over the head

Some closed styles are built with a concealed zip or a button placket down the front. From the outside they read as a closed cut, but they are easier to get into and do not disturb a headscarf.

If that matters to your customers, ask for it specifically. It is a construction difference, not a styling one, and it changes the pattern.

Where closed cuts sell

Closed and overhead abayas are the daily standard across much of the Gulf, and they are the cut most often recommended for Umrah and Hajj because there is no inner dress to manage.

In the UK, Europe and North America they sell more narrowly, mostly for prayer and for customers who prefer full coverage without layering.

Buying closed abayas for your shop

The fit tolerance is tighter than an open cut. There is no front opening to absorb a difference across the chest, so the shoulder and the length have to be right.

Get the size run right

The size is the length in inches from shoulder to hem, chosen by height. We grade 52 to 60 as standard and make 62 to 66 to order.

Weight your buy to the middle of the run. On a closed cut a wrong length is a return, because the customer cannot style around it.

Fabric for the climate

For hot markets and for pilgrimage, lighter nida or a breathable cotton blend wears better over long days. A heavier crepe suits a more structured, formal closed cut.

Whatever the cloth, check it against strong daylight before you commit. A closed abaya is worn without a layer underneath, so opacity matters more here than on any other cut.
