Why buyers pick plus size

  1. A plus pattern, not a bigger one

    Armhole, shoulder and sleeve are re-drafted. Scaling up a size 54 puts all three in the wrong place and no amount of extra fabric fixes it.

  2. Length and girth are separate

    Most grading ties width to length, so a short, fuller customer is sold a garment built for a tall one. We separate them where it matters.

  3. Mixes with your standard sizes

    Plus and standard count toward the same 20 piece minimum, so you can add a few without a second order.

Ask any supplier which of these five they change for their plus range. If the answer is "we add two inches per size", that is a scaled standard pattern with a plus label on it.

Why a plus pattern matters

Most plus size abayas on the market are a standard pattern made bigger. Everything widens at once, including the parts of the garment that should not.

The shoulder slides off the shoulder. The armhole hangs somewhere near the ribs. The sleeve outgrows the arm. The customer blames the size, orders the next one up, and it fits worse.

The two-axis problem

Abaya sizing runs on length: a 56 is 56 inches from shoulder to hem. In most grading, width increases automatically with length.

That works if tall people are always wider, which they are not. A tall slim customer gets something billowing. A shorter, fuller customer buys up for the body and then stands on the hem. Both send it back and both think the brand got it wrong.

What to do about it in your shop

Publish length and body measurements separately on your product pages instead of one size number. We give you both for every style you buy, which is the cheapest returns fix available to you.

Which cuts sell best

A-line and open cuts lead. They give room through the body and hip without adding bulk across the shoulders.

Avoid clingy knits and very light cloth. Nida and crepe drape away from the body, which is what a plus customer is usually asking for.

Buying plus sizes for your shop

Plus is under-served nearly everywhere, which is exactly why it is worth stocking properly rather than as an afterthought.

Start small and made to order

Made to order means you are not holding depth in sizes you have not tested. Add a few plus pieces to an order you were placing anyway and see what sells through.

Plus sizes cost a little more because they use more fabric. The quote shows the price per size rather than burying it in an average.

Do not hide the range

Plus customers are used to being an afterthought at the bottom of a size dropdown. Photograph the range on a plus model and say the sizes in the product title.

That is a merchandising decision rather than a manufacturing one, and it is usually what separates a plus range that sells from one that does not.

What sizes count as plus size?

Our plus run is 62 to 66, and we make beyond that on request. The number is the garment length in inches from shoulder to hem.

Are plus size abayas just a bigger version of your standard pattern?

No. Sizes 62 to 66 are drafted from their own block, with the armhole, shoulder and sleeve re-proportioned rather than widened along with everything else.

Why does a plus size abaya fit at the bust but pull at the hips?

Because it was graded up evenly from a smaller pattern. Width gets added everywhere at the same rate instead of where the body actually needs it.

What is the difference between length and girth in abaya sizing?

Length is shoulder to hem and is chosen by height. Girth is bust, waist and hip. Most grading ties the two together, which is why so many abayas fit one part of a customer and not the other.

Do you publish a size chart with bust, waist and hip?

We give you the measured chart for every style you order, not just the length. Ask for it before you buy and publish it on your own product pages.

Should I just order a bigger size for a plus size customer?

No. Sizing up a standard pattern moves the shoulder and the armhole to the wrong place. It makes the garment longer and wider, not better fitting.

What fabric works best for plus size abayas?

Nida and crepe. Both drape away from the body rather than clinging. Avoid very light or tightly knitted cloth.
